Hi, this is a comment.
The thinking is that anyone could comment, although it might need moderation to cut out bad language, defamatory statements etc
The thinking is that only members could add articles etc. Please post what you think up here…
If it is limited to members’ postings, will it nevertheless be open for anyone to read on the web (as it is at the moment)? I think it should: it could then become a campaigning tool — a sort of “Labour in Cameron’s Den” blog — which local press etc might access, and could be useful at elections.
Yes, I agree it should be open, I think comments should be open to all, but there needs to be control who can submit pieces. I too think it would be a good campaigning tool.
If it is open to any member to post whatever they want, is there not a danger of washing dirty linen in public or can this be covered by a sifting/moderating process (ie. not just for bad language and defamatory statements) or should we have a policy that any member ought to be able to say what they think (so long as bad language is not used and no one is defamed) even if third parties could seize on it and exploit apparent divisions/disputes for their own purposes. Philosophically I favour the latter option but wonder if this isn’t politically naive.
As a rule, I tend to go with the lawyers! This is a great idea. Let’s go with it and see how it develops. We’re all sensible and will spot problems quickly enough if we keep an eye on it. Oh, and apols for tonight as I’ve got 2 interviews to prepare for tomorrow and an early start!
I tend to agree with Neil and John that it could be a good marketing tool, but we do need to careful what goes on. How about I draw up a rules for use ie no gouging, scratching, defaming etc.
I also think there needs to be a balance between it being a forum to air ideas and a place to announce what’s going on locally. I’m keen on both, but we will need to watch how it goes.
Also suggestions for anouncements, links etc would be good.
Needs to be clear if it is a public marketing tool or a forum for Labour members. I would be quite happy for my commments such as
“how many more weeks do we have to endure Blair’s neo-conservative Republican foreign policy” public but not all members might see that as helpful marketing. Actually, in reality, it might get us a few votes back when people realise Labour does not equal Blair!
